Enthusiasm with Respect” – We are taking a day away from regular classroom to give you a first hand experience to help you grow your perceptions of history. This is a NATIONAL historic site and is sacred and important to many. This is a place where we come out of respect for those who have fallen to their death in a time of great conflict. This is land where many dead lie buried. How can you show your appreciation for this experience? How can you show respect for those who lie buried?

Hollywood stereotyped the Native Americans


A big part of our studies of the Battle of Little Bighorn (aka Custer's Last Stand) includes perspective, or a persons/peoples point of view. The ideas of 'cowboys and indians' is a large part of what has developed peoples perspective(point of view). Watch the film How Hollywood stereotyped the Native Americans and then answer the questions below.

1-How have western movies portrayed Native Americans?

2-Who is the targeted audience of these 'cowboy and indian' films?

3-What two perspectives are used as examples?

4-The film concludes with the statement, "a nation who does not know its history, has no future." What point does this quote make?

Red Cloud

Red Cloud was a leader of the Lakota people. He led many attacks on the US Military and was very successful in all of his battles. His life was filled with war. He fought other tribes early in life and later lead his people in the most successful war of an Indian tribe against the US. Most of his war battles occurred before the Battle at Little Big Horn, but he continued to resist tactics of the US in other ways.

Sitting Bull

Sitting Bull, a defeated enemy or a hero? Sitting Bull was involved in many conflicts and battles of the Indian War. He showed great charisma in leading his people. His persistence and determination to live free in a time of conflict and harsh conditions is admirable and inspirational.

Marcus Reno

Marcus Reno was in charge of the only unit that survived the Battle at Little Big Horn. He was known as a coward after the battle because he retreated during the battle. He was originally not even allowed to be buried with the men at the memorial site.

Crazy Horse - The Man

Sioux Chief Crazy Horse lead many battles against the US because he disputed treaties established by the US military. He is acclaimed for his ferocity in battle and efforts in preserving his peoples way of life. He refused to have pictures taken of him and most images of him today are interpretations, such as this one by Brian Fox. Crazy Horse is most famous for his leadership in the Battle of Little Big Horn.

General George Custer

George Custer (1839-1876) is considered by some a war hero. He served as a commander in the Civil War and became a Brigadier General of the United States Volunteers at the age of 23. He died at the Battle of Little Big Horn at the age of 36.
